# TROUBLESHOOTING: Four menus will always be available to the user: FILE, DATABASE, HELP, and QUIT. You can always OPEN an existing IMAGE in uncompressed .BMP format under the FILE menu, and you can always CONVERT an existing IMAGE in the .TGA format under the FILE menu. You can always display an existing DATABASE, you can always get HELP, and you can always QUIT. The IMAGE and EDGE options require that a .BMP image should already be OPENed. The ANALYSIS and VIEW ACTIVE DATABASE options require that an IMAGE/BLOCK SELECT should already be performed on the OPEN image. All files must reside in the same directory as the program file. Files may include: 8-bit uncompressed black-and-white MS-bitmap files (name ending in .BMP); 8-bit uncompressed black-and-white Targa files (name ending in .TGA); database files (name ending in .DBS). BLOCK SELECT. In order to analyze a desired particle, you must locate the particle with a circumscribed rectangle about the particle. Then place the pointer at the upper-left corner of the particle. Then click the mouse (left) button, and drag the mouse to the lower-right corner of the particle. Finally, release the mouse button. Then the software will identify the edge of the particle, and draw an edge around the particle. Select ANALYSIS or DATABASE to view data for the particle just selected. PERIMETER ERROR. The edge-detection method must find a continuous perimeter around the particle within the select-block. This error may occur because the particle touches the edge of the select-block, because the particle has a very irregular edge, because the particle is fragmented, or because the THRESHOLD is misplaced. You may resize the BLOCK SELECT (IMAGE menu) and try again. If the image is dark, then move the THRESHOLD to a lower value. If the image is light, then move the THRESHOLD to a higher value. #
